Highline garden. The high line is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on manhattans west side. The high lines renowned plantings are inspired by the natural landscape that grew wild here before the park was open to the public. Saved from demolition by neighborhood residents and the city of new york the high line opened in 2009 as a hybrid public space where visitors experience nature art and design. The 15 mile garden that runs parallel to the hudson river sees different levels of wind exposure light conditions affected by neighboring buildings and soil depths predetermined by the high lines train tracks.
You can explore more than a dozen different environs each adapted to the specific microclimate of sun shade water and wind created by the cityscape around it. Wandering through our gardens youll find perennials grasses shrubs and trees that were chosen for their hardiness sustainability and ever changing textures and colors in all four seasons. The high line is very beautiful and great. These factors are all major considerations in the planting of each section.
Its nice to go there after visiting the chelsea market then walk up to 34th street or so until you get to hudson yards and the vessel. The garden is situated on approximately 11 acres adjacent to the north seatac community center. Owned by the city of new york the high line is a public park programmed maintained and operated by friends of the high line in partnership with the new york city department of parks recreation.
